DRILL NAME: Tutorial - Footwork for Blockers Getting Hitting Space after a Block Touch
SKILL FOCUS: Movement Tutorial
MINIMUM PLAYERS REQUIRED: 1
BEGINNER FRIENDLY: Yes
DRILL EXPLANATION: Tutorial
KEYS: Footwork for blockers after getting a touch on the block is one of the tougher movements in the game because there are only 2 more touches allowed on your side. This can make players feel rushed but by using this footwork, you can give yourself enough space and time to have a solid attack. After the touch on the block the blocker should use an open step where you are opening your body to your partner then a quick hop landing in a staggered foot position. This will allow your next step to be your first step on your approach. While using this open step + hop, you should be creating at least 10-12 feet from the net allowing you to approach and hit your partners set.
Since the point is a quick play a lot of players will get frozen and not move off the net at all. This is a problem because you are either going to have to send a free ball or try to hit a ball coming over your shoulder taking away all vision from the court.
It also important to rely heavily on a strong last two steps of your approach to provide the highest possible contact point.
